What is art?

2024

THE CURRENT PHOTOGRAPHY REVOLUTION

Being behind the camera has always been my thing. I'll never forget, in 6th grade, getting to work in a real dark room developing our photos from outdoor lab. Competing to be chosen for yearbook photographer in junior high and getting the gig based on my natural eye for composition was so exciting then. Yet, it wasn't until many years later, after my move to Florida, that I started actually learning how to use a camera.

Photography was going through what seemed like a revolution around then (2010) with cell phones suddenly able to produce digital images that rivaled those from professional cameras. Some photographers hadn't moved on from film to digital and they were already faced with another extreme disruption in their industry.

The technological pace felt dramatic but pales by comparison to the cataclysmic change lurking just a decade later with generative images, aka AI.

We now must decide, amidst a labyrinth of new context, this age-old question: What is art?

My thoughts on this subject run for days and will be on my substack. I'd love to hear yours.
